Arturas Bumsteinas - Second Sequentina
Continue reading "Arturas Bumsteinas - Second Sequentina"
"Arturas Bumsteinas is a composer from Vilnius, Lithuania. He composes both electronic music and works for traditional instruments. In 2002 he formed a duo with Laura Garbstiene (as G-Lab). Bumsteinas intrigued from the very beginning that I heard work from him. He is also quite active in the Vilnius art scene, and I think that from the ex-Sovjet area a lot of talent wanders around working with the intentions and sometimes lack of decent instruments that was usual in my olden days. It's not always brilliant but there's definitely something interesting happening.
This composition, "second Sequentina", is an electronic sequel to "Sequentina for orchestra". There's a recording of the original at Bumsteinas' site, so you can listen to it. I think this Second Sequentina is an excellent example of Bumsteinas' music, but I really encourage all of you to check out the website and listen and watch the other things presented there.
As a bonus I present a short film that has been published on Bumsteinas' Mixthemixthemix project site. It's called "Bumsteinas plays Baldessari sings LeWitt (Instrumental version of Sentences on Conceptual Art)" encoded in avi format for all to see. This too is, to me, an excellent example of the mind set of Arturas Bumsteinas.

"in september 2003, it all started with a compilation, and now it all ends with a compilation. what else could be such a good way to witness the label's progress through almost 2 years of its existence, as well as the progress of its artists, especially with some of those featured in this final compilation having been featured in surfaces netlabel's very first collective release? here are 11 tracks that trip from sparse ambience to soothing noisy walls of sound. 'by way of conclusion' may easily be one of the best surfaces releases. it is intended to be an impressive and persuasive leaving with a lasting impression. enjoy the very last sounds of surfaces netlabel!
the compilation is mastered by mckaras (lt)" (From the Surfaces' release page)

"Arturas Bumsteinas is a digital media artist from Vilnius, Lithuania. He has released several works in MP3 and CDR format, and performs frequently in various countries of Europe. Placido explores a number of approaches to digital music: at times abstract, other times the source material floats to the surface, only to shatter into a million fragments." "Bumsteinas is a musician from Vilnius / Lithuania sometimes also working in interdisciplinary art duo G-LAB as video artist and performer. Retorta is a state of limpness and placidity, but it's not always a soul serenity.
- "Charging" was made from small sounds deriving from random techno tracks those were found lurking in the hardisc of my computer. Also additional layers of sine waves and close-up microphone sounds were included. "Charging" was recorded in one-day recording session (2003/08/?).
"Opsound" was premiered in Launch Option Berlin fetival in BuroFriedrich Gallery (2003/07/24). This composition was part of audiovisual performance "Low" by G-Lab.
"Moc Art" is a composition concisting from field recordings, sounds generated on computer and saxophone part performed by Liudas Mockunas. Mockunas is a prominent improvized musician living in Lithuania and Denmark. Final overdub of "Moc Art" was done in the studio of Lithuanian National Drama Theater (2003/09/01).
"Uonsed" uses wide spectrum of sounds from: old Russian synthesizer Polyvox, tape noises, sine waves, turntable sounds by Dj Pitt, voices from Antiradical Opera collective. Composition done in summer of 2003." (From the Nexsound's release page)
